Federated Cloud

This document presents the high level reference architecture for a federated cloud over multiple regions, possibly managed by different organizations.

The architecture is based on the open‐source OpenStack cloud technology, which is currently the de facto standard. As it is typical with open‐source solutions, the solution offers reduced investment and operational costs and scalability without licensing limitations. However, building a cloud remains a complex task, which requires the integration of several disparate components.

To simplify the process, reduce the required man‐power, reduce risk and keep services always up to date, an effort must be placed on using tools for automatig the steps needed to create, implement and support a production‐ready cloud OpenStack. Below we outline an automation solution based on Juju.
